Hide
This game follows the same set-up as Lucky Dice. Once again the flashcards are attached along the bottom of the whiteboard as shown below:
Whiteboard
FC FC FC FC FC FC
Two students (one from each team) are called to the front. They are given a few seconds to study the FCs before the teacher instructs them to, “Turn around,” so that they are facing away from the whiteboard. The teacher then whips away one of the FCs, hides it behind his or her back, and shouts, “Turn around!”
It is now a race between the students to name the FC that is missing. The first student to name this FC is given points for their team (if any of the other students cheat by whispering the answer, you can either award the points to the other team or simply tell them not to cheat and start again).
I have found that the best way to score this is to give three points to the student who names the missing FC first, and if the other student names the same FC barely a second later then they can get two points. If one student names the FC and the other student says nothing (a blank expression or a look of defeat) then it is 3 – 1 to the winning student. If the two students name the missing FC at the same time, it is 3 – 3.
There is a reason why I often score the game in this way. It is because, once you have been playing Lucky Dice and Hide for a while, you can combine the two games to make a new game called Lucky, Hide. For this game you simply alternate between Lucky Dice and Hide.
For example the #4 students from team A and B come to the front. The teacher rolls a number three and they both say, “Wardrobe!” together and are awarded one point each. The teacher rolls the dice again and it lands on the number 6. The #4s from team B says, “Armchair!” first so now it is 1 – 2 to team B. The teacher rolls the dice a final time and it lands on a number three again. This time the #4s from team A says, “Wardrobe!” first so it is 2 – 2. The #4 students return to their chairs and the teacher randomly selects the #1 students from team A and B to come to the front. This time the teacher plays Hide. The two #1 students turn to face away from the whiteboard while the teacher whips away the [cupboard] FC, saying, “Ok, ready!” The two #1 students swivel around to stare at the FCs, trying to work out which one is missing. Suddenly the #1s from team A shouts out, “Cupboard!” and is quickly followed by the #1s from team B who also shouts out, “Cupboard!” The teacher thus decides that this ‘mini battle’ is to be scored 3 – 2 to team A. Next the teacher randomly selects the #5 students from team A and B to come to the front and rolls the dice ... i.e., the teacher alternates between the two activities. This constant change of task makes for a rather fresh and exciting game.
