Lucky Dice

 Lucky Dice

For this game you attach the FCs in a line along the bottom of the whiteboard as shown below:

Whiteboard

1                 2                 3                 4                 5                 6

FC             FC             FC             FC             FC             FC

You then number the FCs [1 – 6], using a marker pen to write numbers above each FC (as shown above).

Let us say for example that the FCs are for furniture: bed, chest of drawers, wardrobe, cupboard, sofa and armchair.

Two students are called to the front. The teacher rolls a dice. The dice lands on a [six]. The first student to say [“Armchair!”] is the winner and gets points for their team.

Because this can be a rather quick interaction, it is a good idea to do a ‘best of three’ for each pair of students.

So to run through an example: the #6s from each team is called to the front. The teacher rolls the dice and it lands on the number three. The #6s from team A calls out, “Wardrobe!” and in reaction the teacher acknowledges that it is 1 – 0 to team A. The teacher then rolls the dice again and it lands on the number five. Both students call out, “Sofa!” at the same time so the teacher rewards them with one point each. It is now 2 – 1 to team A. Finally the teacher rolls the dice a third time and it lands on a one. Both students again call out in unison: “Bed!” so the teacher once more gives them a point each so the final score is 3 – 2 to team A. The #6 students now return to their seats and the #2 students are called up to play.

When scoring games it is best to tally up the points that have been won during each ‘mini battle’ so that once the activity is over (i.e., every student has taken a turn) you have a team that is the overall winner.

For example:

A

B

3

2

1

3

1

2

___

12

2

1

2

0

3

1

___

9

In the above example, team A is the winner with twelve points and team B is the loser with nine. These points can be added to the overall score that the teams have been accumulating during the lesson (for the other games and activities that they have been doing as well as points awarded for good behaviour, etc., – it all depends on your scoring system). Team A can also receive a bonus amount of points for winning this game, which can be added to their total score. If your scoring system involves progressing along something (like a ladder to get to the top where they can throw a dice to get bonus points), then team A can be moved further along this scoring system. Alternatively they can receive an extra reward such as candy or a game of their choice.

Of course using six FCs for this game, although ideal, is only an example. With a twelve sided dice you could use more.
