Face Off

Face Off

The students are now at a stage where they should know the FC vocabulary well. This game is a fun test to see how well each student is doing.

The teacher stands at the front with the wad of FCs in their hands.

The students form two standing lines, team A and team B in parallel, all students facing the teacher and whiteboard, just like the Hit game.

WHITEBOARD

teacher

Team A                                         Team B

#1s         #1s

#2s          #2s

#3s         #3s

#4s         #4s

#5s         #5s

#6s         #6s

Once the students are ready and have settled down into their standing lines, the teacher quickly reveals the first FC (from the wad of flashcards) to the two #1 students. The first #1s to say this FC is the winner and can go back to their seat. The other #1s must go to the back of their team’s line. (The first time you play you will have to explain that only the students at the front of their team’s line are ‘in play’ and therefore only these students can say what the FC is (“No helping!” says the teacher).)

So in the above example, let us say that the #1s from team A was quicker to name the FC revealed by the teacher. This student sits down and is out of the game while the #1s from team B must go to the back of the team B line. Team B now has six students in their line while team A only has five students in their line.

And so the game continues with the teacher quickly revealing FCs, instructing the winning student to “Sit down,” and the other student to “Go to the back.” The next FC is revealed to the following pair of students ... gradually the lines get smaller and smaller as more winning students go back to their seats.

The first team to have all of their members back in their seats is the winner. The other team, with members still left standing in their line, is the losing team.

Sometimes you will get two students naming the FC at the same time. If this happens, you can either send them both to the back, decide to reveal another FC to the same pair of students, or get them to do a “paper, scissors, stone” to decide who can sit down and who must go to the back.

This is a quick and easy game that can be used to review FC vocabulary at the beginning of the class as a warmer, or in the middle of the class as a nice ‘change of pace’ game to get them out of their chairs.
